Aberdeen is named after Aberdeen in Scotland, the birthplace of the Reverend Andrew Murray, who was Dutch Reformed Church minister in Graaff-Reinet.

The steeple of the Dutch Reformed Church is 51.5m high, leaning off-centre by 45.7cm.Tracks of dinosaurs can be seen in sedimentary rocks.

History

Aberdeen was established in 1855 on the settler farm Brakkefontein (which means Dogs Fountain) by the Dutch Reformed Church. It became a municipality in 1858.

Ecosystem

On the banks of the Kraai River there is the Fonteinbos Nature Reserve. The white stinkwood (Celtis africana) is indignous to the Kamdebo Mountains.
