Butterworth is named after Joseph Butterworth, treasure of the Wesleyan Missionary Society.

There are two waterfalls near the town: Bawa Falls with a drop of 100m in the Qolora River, and the Gcuwa River cascades (90m).

History


Butterworth is also known as Gcuwa. It was originally a Wesleyan mission built in 1827. It is near the seat of Hintsa, chief of Gcaleka of the Xhosa tribe. During the Frontier Wars the mission was burnt down 3 times. The town became a municipality in 1904.
