History

The river in which the harbor is built was known by the San as the Ingaad! Ab (Buffaloes River) and by Xhosas as Bisho (Buffalo). In 1836 a trading post was established by George Rex of Knysna, and the place was called Port Rex. During the Seventh Frontier War, which began in 1847, a fort was built (Fort Glamorgan) and after the war the habor came into regular use. A village grew around the harbor. In 1847 the village was renamed East London.
