History

King Williams Town was established by the London Missionary Society in 1826. During the next decades there were skirmishes with the Xhosa people. In 1835 and in 1846 they destroyed the mission. A military camp was settled there, and in 1857 2'500 of the disbanded German Legion settled in the area.
