Several watch-towers were built across some distance during the 1841, called Fort Peddie, Piet appel, Frasers Camp, Fort Selwyn (as far away as Grahamstown). Their remains can still be seen.

History
Peddie begun as a fort built in 1835 for the protection of the Fingo tribe. It became a magistracy in 1848 and a municipality in 1905.
