Senekal is a small town on the banks of the Sand River, which flows into the Vet River near Hoopstad, and which in turn flows into the Vaal River at the Bloemhof Dam.
The Witteberge mountain range lies less than 70Km to the east of Senekal, and the Korannaberg mountains to the south.
The sandstone Dutch Reformed Church was built in 1896. Fossils of plants and trees were found in the valley of the Sand River. Some of the petrified trunks were used to build a wall around thhe church.
The Wag ‘n Bietjie trail is in the Korannaberg, to the south of Senekal. There is also a Fern Route hiking trail.
The upstream side of Allemanskraal Dam is about 30Km from Senekal. The dam is in the Willem Pretorius Nature Reserve.

Senekal was laid out in 1874 on the farm De Put, owned by F Malan.
