History
Thaba Nchu was the stronghold of the Barolong people. They were frequently attacked during the Difaqane (or Mfecane, a period of tribal wars). Their Chief Moroko befriended the Dutch pioneers (Voortrekkers). In 1833 a mission was establisehd by the Reverend James Archbell of the Wesleyan Church. A trading centre developed around the church. In 1873 Thaba Nchu became a municipality.
