Willem Pretorius Nature Reserve

The Willem Pretorius Nature Reserve is about 30Km south of Ventersburg. The Allemanskraal Dam is in the reserve.

Sand River Convention Monument

The Sand River Convention Monument is 15km south of Venterburg off the N1 to Winburg. The Monument marks the spot where the Sand River Convention took place, and a treaty signed by the Free State and Britain to recognise the independence of the Free State.

History

From 1864 church services were held in the farmhouse of Kromfontein farm, owned by the Venter family. A community was established around the church. The first stand were sold in 1871, and the town was officially established on 6 May 1873.

In 1891 a Dutch Reform Church was built, but it was burnt down in 1900 by the British forces during the Anglo-Boer War. The church was re-built in 1912.

The Ventersburg railway station, called Ventersburg Road, is about 18Km from town, and was renamed in 1927 to Henneman.
