The Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve (96'000 Ha) lies between Hluhluwe (east) and Ulundi and Nongoma (west), and Empangeni (south) and Mkuze (north).
The park is on rolling savannah hills with low acacia bush.
It is claimed that the Zulu kings Shaka kaSenzangakhona (ca. 1787-1828) and Cetshwayo kaMpande (1826 - 1884) hunted in this area, and intriduced some conservation rules.
The reserve was formally established in 1895.
The Big Five (lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo and rhinoceros) can be viewed here. Other game include blue wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, kudu, eland, duiker, suni, reedbuck, impala (a herd of 24'000) waterbuck, nyala, kudu, bushbuck, warthog, cheetah, hyena, jackal.
The reserve is known for its white rhino conservation efforts. There are 1,600 white rhino (the largest population in the world) and 370 black rhino in the reserve.
More than 300 bird species have been recorded.
There are viewing hides overlooking pans and waterholes. A boat with 40 seats takes two trips per day on the Hluhluwe Dam.

Annual rainfall: 750-1'000mm, falling in summer (September to April)
Winter (May to August): does not get cold, and nights are just cool.
