Ithala Game Reserve

Kwazulu-Natal

The Ithala Game Reserve lies in mountainous thornveld in northern Kwazulu-Natal, south of Swaziland. The reserve is about 290 km² (30'000Ha) in size. The geography varies from about 400m high near the Pongola River, to about 1450m in the Ngotshe Mountains.

The Zulu King Dinizulu gave land in the area to white farmers in the late 1800s. In the 1970s it was decided to turn the area into a reserver, and the Natal Parks Board started buying land in 1973.

The only herds of tsessebe in Kwazulu-Natal are found here. Other animals are: klipspringer, blue wildebeest, red hartebeest, giraffe, blac as well as white rhino, warthog, and predators such as leopard and crocodile.

Four of the Big 5 are found here -- only lion missing.

Several kinds of eagle are found: black eagle, fish eagle, martial eagle, Wahlberg's eagle, black-breasted snake eagle, and banded snake eagle.

The nearest town is the village Louwsburg.
