Germiston is mainly a commercial and industrial city. The East Rand Shopping Mall is situated in the suburb of Bedfordview. Germiston Lake offers watersports such as sailing and picnics spots. An Illuminated Fountain is in the shape of mining headgear. The Rondebult Bird Sanctuary is a rare wetland area and home to many birds and some mammals, such as zebra, blesbok, reedbuck, springbok.

History

John Jack, a trader from Lake Chrissie, travelled here and found interesting results from his prospecting efforts on a farm called Elandsfontein. He began a mining company with partner August Simmer and laid out a town for the mine workers. He called the town Germiston. It became a municipality in 1903 and a city in 1950.
