The old sandstone railway station, built in 1895, is now a motor museum: the Heidelberg Transport Museum. The Diepkloof Farm Museum in the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, is housed in a building built in 1850 by Jan Marais.

In 1862 HJ Uekermann, a German, establish a trading post here. He laid out the town on a portion of the farm Langlaagte.
