Andries Stockenström (1792-1864)

Andries Stockenström was born in Cape Town in 1792 and died in London in 1864.

His father was Anders Stockenström (1757-1811), who was stationed in Graaff-Reinet. Andries worked at his father's office, and went on several expeditions into the interior with the British military.

He became assistant landdrost of Graaff-Reinet, and later of Cradock. He led several military campaigns against the Xhosa people - these wer eknown as the Frontier Wars.

He was lieutenant governor of British Kaffraria from 13 September 1836 to 9 August 1838.

British Kaffraria was the name of the areas today including towns such as King Williams Town and East London - thus a part of the Eastern Cape.
