History

Durban is known as eThekweni in Zulu, meaning Place of the Bay. The harbor is fed by several streams: Mhlatuzana, Mbilo. The bay probably started out as a large lagoon which eventually opened up to the sea. The northern tip joining the ocean is known as Point, while the southern tip is known as the Bluff. In early days the bay was inhabited by the Lala tribe and Luthuli clan. The first European to live here was a survivor, Rodrigo Tristao, of a Portuguese shipwreck, Saint John in 1552. In 1497 Vasco da Gama named the coast Natal, and the bay entrance Rio de natal. In 1824 a group of Brits settled here under command of Henry Francis Fynn. The name Durban was given to the settlement in 1835 by the Reverend Allen Gardiner.
