Estcourt is named after a member of English parliament, Thomas Estcourt, who sponsored immigration of the settlers to this location

Trout fishing can be done in the Bushmans River. Wagendrift Dam (4Km from town) offers fishing and water sport. There is a picnic spot and nature reserve with campsites. Moor Park Nature Reserve on one side of the lake has zebra, blesbok, wildebeest, impala and kudu.

History

In the 1840s Clem Heeley built an inn and trading store on this location. When the a San tribe raided the place in 1849 a fort was built, which was rebuilt in 1874. A village grew around the fort, and it was given the name Estcourt in 1863. It became a municipality in 1914.
