History
In 1849 three farms in this area were granted to the Reverend James Archbell, a Wesleyan missionary. The first stands were sold in 1850. Howick became a stopover for travelers. At the top end of the waterfall a ferry was operated in the 1800s by a man with the name Lodge, but floods often caused havoc. In 1851 the Lodge son was swept away by the river. A wooden bridge was built in 1872, which was also taken away by floods. In 1903 a more permanent structure was built as a bridge.
