History
In 1826 there was an attempt by ivory traders to establish a harbor here. In 1897 a survey was done and conluded that the bay would be a good harbor, offering an area twice that of the Durban harbor. Again nothing much happened. Richards Bay began as a small holiday resort on the lagoon at the the mouth of the Mhlatuze River. In the 1970s it was eventually developed as a deep-water harbor for the export of minerals and opened in 1976. It became a municipality in 1981.
