Shakas Indaba tree, a Mkuhla (or Natal mahogany) still grows in front of the municipal offices. Meetings were conducted in the shade of this tree. Shaka was murdered here by his half brothers Mhlangana and Dingane. A large Indian community live in Stanger which gives the town an eastern atmosphere.

History


Stanger was laid out in 1873 on the site of the Zulu King Shaka's last capital, Kwadukuza. The royal hut stood where today the police station is located.
