Winklespruit gets its name from the Afrikaans Winkelspruit, which means Shop (or trading centre) Stream

History

In 1875 a schooner, Tonga, carrying groceries, was wrecked no this beach. A store was quickly erected to sell the salvaged goods. One theory about its name that it gets its name from this store. Another theory says it comes from periwinkle which is found here.
