The largest man-made hole in Africa is located near Ba-Phalaborwa. This is a copper mine (Palabora) of 2Km in diamter, and 762m deep, which is 230m below sea level. Te hole can be seen from outer space.

History

The Karanga tribe of the Zimbabwe area settled here long ago, mining iron and copper.The modern town was liad on on a setller farm called 'Laaste' and proclaimed a town in 1957.
