History

In the 1820s a European settler, Coenraad Buys settled in the area. In 1836 Louis Trichardt temporarily camped here while he scouted the area in the present Zimbabwe and eastward toward Mocambique. In 1847 another pioneer group under leadership of Hendrik Potgieter established a town here, called Zoutpansbergdorp. In 1852 Stepahnus Schoeman became the leader of the town, and it was hence called Schoemansdal. In 1867 the town was abandoned and destroyed by the Venda people. In 1898 the town was proclaimed as Louis Trichardt. In 2002 the town was renamed Makhado.
