Thabazimbi's elevation is 945m above sea-level and it is located at the Ysterberg. Other "mountains" in the area are Boshofberg and Kransberg. There are many game farms, hiking trails, bird watching opportunities in the area.
An annual Thabazimbi Game and Tourism Expo is held in May, focusing on hunting. A game auction forms part of the festival.
The Ben Alberts Nature Reserve borders the southwest of the town.
The Marakele National Park is about 15Km northeast of Thabazmibi on the Waterberg Mountain Range. The Big 5 have been reintroduced to this park.
The Welgevonden Nature Reserve borders the Marakele National Park and exists near Vaalwater.
The Pilanesberg Game Reserve is about 30Km south of Thabazimbi on the R510.
The Atherton Nature Reserve is located near the Botswana border.
An iron ore reef of hematite was discovered in 1919 at Vliegpoort by JH Williams and the town was established as a mining centre. In 1930 the railway line reached Thabazimbi from Pretoria. In 1931 the Government bought the ore body and ISCOR started iron production.
The town became a municipality in 1953.
Thabazimbi lies within the WWF AT0717 Southern Africa bushveld ecoregion.

Annual rainfall, falling around January to March, is approximately 600mm.
