Breyten lies on the watershed between rivers that flow east (Komati and Olfiants) to the Indian Ocean and west (Vaal) to the Atlantic Ocean. The source of the Vaal River is 2Km from Breyten. There is a pile of rocks, called Klipstapel (Pile of Rocks) which mark the highest point of the watershed. Ruins of early Sotho settlements can be seen in the area. These stone ruins were occupied by the Leghoya tribe, who no longer exist.
