Carolina is named after Carolina Coetzee, wife of the owner on whose farm the town was built.

Carolina is on the R38 between Hendrina and Badplaas and Barberton, and on the R33 between Belfast and Warburton on the way to Mbabane in Swaziland, and the R36 between Ermelo and Machadodorp.

Doornkop Fish And Wildlife Reserve

The Doornkop Fish And Wildlife Reserve (2000Ha) is in the Komati River Valley. The The Komati River and Swartvlei Spruit flow through the reserve.

Game viewing can be enjoyed on foot, mountain bike, or horseback. Birdwatching (203 species) and fishing (yellowfish and trout) can be done.

Nooitgedacht Dam Nature Reserve

The Nooitgedacht Dam Nature Reserve is off the R33 toward Belfast, about 10Km from Carolina. It is on the highveld grasslands, and the Komati River flows through it.

Game to be viewed: blesbok, red hartebeest and black wildebeest.

Activities: Yatching, fishing and camping.

Lake Chrissie / Chrissiesmeer

Lake Chrissie (Chrissiesmeer ) is south of Carolina. This Lake District has about 270 small lakes and pans within a 20Km radius. The area offers birdwatching, and for the more patient, frog watching - there are 13 species of frogs. Frog tours have been on offer for more than a decade.

History

The wagon trail to the nearby gold fields in the Kaap Valley lead through this area, and in 1882 farmers decided to establish a town. CJ Coetzee, owner of the farm Steynsdraai, offered a portion of his farm, provided that it is named after his wife, Carolina. The town was procalimed in 1885.
