Malelane means Small Lala Palms

Malelane is only 43Km from the Mocambique border. It is thus within reach of a quick day trip to Maputo.

The Swaziland border at Matsomo is also only 43Km from Malelane.

There is a gate to the Kruger National Park at Malelane -- in fact just a couple of kilometers outside Malelane. It is possible to take a day trip in the the park.

Ecoregion

Malelane falls within the WWF's Southern Africa bushveld region. The South African Highveld lies to the southeast.

This area is part of the Barberton granite, which originated between 3'000 and 2'700 million years when it formed the earth's oldest continent, Pangea. The area is characterised by hills that consist of huge granite marbles that seem to have been dropped there by a giant.

Economy

Agriculture, such as sugar, is the main economy in this region, although there are also numerous lodges (including game lodges) and hospitality services.

Malelane has a shopping mall with most of the national brands. Many more affluent Mocambicans do their shopping here.
