Middelburg means Middle Town

Attractions

Kruger Dam offers recreational facilities. Meyers Bridge was bilt in 1890. Fort Merensky, 13Km from town, was built by Sothos under the missionary Reverend Merensky as protection against rival tribes.

History

Middelburg was established in 1859 as a haflway town between Pretoria an Lydenburg. The town was actually only developed 7 years later in 1866 by the Dutch Reformed Church and called Nazareth. Over years the town grew only to 7 houses, and the Biblical phrase Nothing good ever comes from Nazareth led to a petition to change the name back to Middelburg. This seems to have worked as the town has grown substantially over the years.
