Nelspruit is named after the brothers Andries, Gert and Louis Nel who owned the farm on which the town was built.

Nelspruit is host to the 19th FIFA World Cup.

Nelspruit was first a railway station in 1892 and proclaimed a town in 1905. It became a municipality in 1940.
