Standerton (elevation 1'540m) lies on the banks of the Vaal River. This area is within the WWF highveld grassland ecoregion, and relatively flat with water pans and scattered streams.
The ruins of Chief Mzilikazi village can be viewed.
Kruger bridge crossing the Vaal River, built in 1891, still stands.
Standerskop Nature Reserve (128Ha) is home to grassland birds.
Grootdraai Dam (completed in 1982) offers watersport and camping. The dam is about 10Km upstream from the town.
There are rock engravings near Standerton.
Standerton was founded in 1878 on the farm Grootverlangen, owned by Adriaan Hendrik Stander (1817-1896), and proclaimed as town in 1879. Stander was also a Boer commander in the First Anglo-Boer War.
During the First Anglo-Boer War (1880-1881) a British garrison was stationed in Standerton. They built some fortifications aroun the town, but they were besieged by the Boers for 3 months. Five British soldiers died during the siege.
