Since the 1990s there has been a change in the demarcation of municipal boundaries and names. Many of the new names are not widely known, and as there are also numerous travel related publications out there containing old information, a traveler may be mislead.

This section in the Routes Travel Info Portal lists the official municipal names as determined by the Municipal Demarcation Board and the Department of Provincial and Local Government. However, the Routes Travel Info Portal is structured following the more well-known names.

Some names with click sounds may be difficult to find as the character symbols used for the click sounds are special characters in computer languages. To avoid this problem, we have dropped characters such as ! and //. So in order to find !Garib, see Garib, and to find //Khara, see Khara.
