Addo Elephant National Park

Addo Elephant National Park is located across the Zuurberg Mountains, north of which the Great Karoo stretches out.

The park now stretches to the Indian Ocean, since the Woody Cape Nature Reserve was incorporated. It covers 1,480 km², and once all the other areas are incoroprated, will cover 3,600 km², and will be called the Greater Addo Elephant National Park. This park will include seven biomes, and in addition to the Big 5, will include whales and sharks on the ocean side.

The Greater park will include Bird Island, where gannets and penguins breed. There are 120'000 breeding gannets on Bird Island. The second largest penguiun breeding spot in South Africa is also at bird Island. St. Croix Island is also close by.

In 1931 there were only 11 elephants in the area. To protect the, Sydney Skaife founded the park. The number of elephants have since grown to about 450.

Game: lion, spotted hyena, 400 Cape buffalo, about 50 black rhino.

Insects: endemic to the area is a flightless dung beetle (Circellium bacchus).

Location and Roads

Two looped tourist roads in the park are tarred, the rest are gravel roads.

The Addo Elephant National Park is situated in the Eastern Cape near Port Elizabeth. Follow the N2 or N10, or one of the following routes:

Kirkwood is the closest large town.

Accommodation

Within the park there are five Parks Board camps: one main camp, four rest camps. See accommodation within the park.

There are four camps run by contractors.
