Fynbos is a general description for a range of plants unique to the southwestern Cape of South Africa and covers 54% of this ecoregion. Renosterveld is dominated by the renosterbos (Elytropappus rhinocerotis, Asteraceae) and covers 46% of this region. With 9'000 species it is one of the most diverse regions in the world -- the highest outside tropical rain forest areas. About 80% of plant species are endemic.

Location

The ecoregion is found mostly in the mountains and uplands of the Western Cape Province with a small portion in the neighboring Eastern Cape Province. The are is the same as that of the Lowland Fynbos ecoregion, except that this ecoregion is at a higher altitude in the mountains.

There are 4 subregions:

Western Mountains

South Coastal Mountains

Interior Mountains

Little Karoo Inselbergs

Elevation

This ecoregion lies above approximately 300 m elevation.

Vegetation

This ecoregion and the Lowland Fynbos and Renosterveld have about 7,000 species. Fynbos covers 54% of the region. Renosterveld is dominated by the renosterbos (Elytropappus rhinocerotis, Asteraceae) and covers 46% of this region.

Fynbos

Fynbos are hard-leaved, evergreen, and fire-prone shrubland and make up four major plant types:

Trees

Trees are rare in fynbos. The Clanwilliam cedar (Widdringtonia nodiflora) is restricted to this ecoregion, found only in the Cedarberg Mountains.

Renosterveld

Renosterveld makes up the cross-over region between fynbos and succulent Karoo. It is found in the western and interior mountain regions where the annual rainfall is between 250 mm (interspersed with succulent Karoo) and 650 mm (interspersed with fynbos).

Renosterveld grows in fine-grained and relatively fertile soils associated with shale bands, mountain basins, and footslopes.

Mammals

There are not many unique mamals to the area, but 127 of southern Africa’s 280 mammal species have been recorded in the Montane Fynbos and Renosterveld ecoregion.

Birds

Bird diversity is low with 288 species recorded (excluding seabirds). Birds pollinate approximately 430 fynbos species.

About one third of the birds are not native to fynbos and do not utilize fynbos resources in any way. These birds have arrived within the last 100 years, and many in the last 50 years, as a result of habitat transformation.

Amphibians

38 species present in both fynbos and renosterveld ecoregions are endemic

Reptiles

109 reptile species, 19 (17.4 percent) of which are endemic. There are more Tortoise species than anywhere else in the world.

Butterflies

The mountain pride butterfly (Meneris tulbaghia) pollinates visits only red flowers and is the exclusive pollinator of at least 15 species of plants.

Bugs

Some bugs are found only here and probably evolved before the great tetonic shifts.
