Boosmansbos Nature Reserve

Western Cape

The Boosmansbos Nature Reserve covers an area of 14'200Ha. It lies just east of Barrydale, although the main entrance is about 30Km from Barrydale off the R322 near Heidelberg.

The Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve (250Ha) is now included in the Boosmansbos Nature Reserve, and makes up the southwestern part of the reserve.

The Grootberg (1'673m) is the highest peak in the area, and lies in the Boosmansbos Nature Reserve.

The Duiwenhoks River originates in this reserve, and flows south, passing Heidelberg on the way to the Indian Ocean at Puntje.

Vegetation: mountain fynbos and valley forest. This reserve protects the last natural afro-montane forest in the region.

Hiking

There is a circular trail of 27Km, which takes 2 days to complete. Altogether there are about 65Km of trails.
