History

In 1864 a town, called Bowesdorp after the district surgen Henry Bowe, was established in the narrow ravine of the Wilgenhouts Kloof. The location was too small for a proper town, and in 1924 all the important services such as police, school, church, post office and shops were transferred to the present location. Only the ruins of Bowesdorp remain.
