History
The area around the bay was known as Auquatowa (meaning Place Where the Water took away the Old Man) in Nama, and was later called Robbebaai. The town Port Nolloth originated during the copper boom. When surveyed in 1854 it was found to be the most suitable place for a harbor to be used for the shipment of copper ore. In 1855 the harbor was established and named after Sir George Grey, the Governor. Copper was transported by wagon until 1876 when a narrow-guage railway was built. A town was laid out around the harbor
