History

In the 1870s the area was inhabited by Korannas under leadership of Klaas Lucas and of Klaas Pofadder. In those days there were river pirates living on the many small islands in the Gariep River (previously known as the Orange River). In 1873 a mission was established at a place, called Olijvenhoutsdrift, where the Gariep River was crossed. The town Upington was founded in 1884.
