History

The area in which Williston was founded was inhabited by a community of about 600 people of diverse origin and no real order. In 1845 a Rhenish mission station was establiseh to bring order to the community and first called Amandelboom after a wild almond tree under which the first missionaries pitched their tent. A town developed and became a municipality in 1881. It was renamed in 1919 to Williston.
