History

A railway line was tapped off the main railway line between Cape Town and Johannesburg to Lichtenburg. The junction was on the farm Rietvlei, the name already used for another station, so this station was renamed Treurfontein. When the village became a municipality in 1923 it was again renamed, this time to Coligny, a Huguenot leader. Many Huguenot descendants farm in this area. During World War I (1914) the Armed Protest took place on Rietvlei farm.
