Lichtenburg has 3 museums and an art gallery. Wondergat is a very deep sinkhole frequented by divers. It is about 40Km north-east of town.

History

In 1873 a town was proclaimed on portions of the farms Elandsfontein and Doornfontein, owned by Hendrek Greef. The town was named by President Thomas Francois Burgers of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek. He hoped that the town could become the light of the region. Lichtenburg became a municipality in 1904. In 1926 a diamond was found by a laborer named Jan on the farm Elandsputte, owned by Jacobus Voorendyk. There was a diamond rush with more than 100'000 diggers over the next year. By 1935 the rush was burnt out after 7 million carats of diamonds were found.
