Meiringspoort photos

Meiringspoort is on the N12, 50Km from Oudtshoorn between De Rust and Klaarstroom. The poort was built between 1856 and 1858.

		Surface of the road in the early days of motor cars.

	Petrus Johannes Meiring (1799-1876), on whose initiative the road was built.	Graffiti done in 1929 by the Afrikaans author CJ Langenhoven (1873-1932) on a stone in Meiringspoort. Herrie is the name of an elephant in his book "Sonde met die bure" (trouble with the neighbors).
