Avontuur is a small village in the foot hills of the Tsitsikamma Mountains, about 10Km from Uniondale, which lies on the border of the Karoo. The village is on the R62 route which stretches from the area of Oyster Bay in the east to Ashton in the west.

Prince Alfred Pass

The Prince Alfred Pass is a narrow gravel road pass on the R339 to Knysna, about 80Km away. Flash floods sometimes damage the road and may make it inaccessible at times. The pass is one of several designed and constructed under the management of Thomas Bains. The safety walls his team built are still standing.

Apple Express Steam Train

Avontuur is the last stop of a narrow-guage (610mm) steam train rail from Port Elizabeth. The steam train running this 283km long route is known as the Apple Express, as the rail route was originally established to transport fruit and produce from the Langkloof to Port Elizabeth.

San Rock Art

San Rock Art can be viewed in the De Hoop region near Avontuur.

History

The village Avontuur was established on a farm with that name, owned by Matthys Zondagh.
