Caledon is named after the Earl of Caledon, who was Governor

Caledon offers the viewing of historical homes, wild flowers and birds. There are walking and 4x4 trails. Caledon is known for its hot springs - 7 iron-rich (i.e. chalybeate) springs are on the slopes surrounding the town. One is cold, the others are thermal. Each day close to a million liters of water heated to about 50°C reach the surface. The water is free of organic matter. There is a wild-flower reserve here.

History


This location was called Disporekamma (meaning Hot Water) by the San and Khoi-Khoi people. The modern town Caledon was founded in 1813.
