Cape Town offers all the entertainment and things to do that any
large city does. Table Mountain is probably the most well-known feature of Cape
Town. It is a 1'086m high flat top sandstone mountain, flanked by peaks known
as Devils Peak, Lions Head, Signal Hill. On a clear day Table Mountain is visible
from 150Km out on sea.
History
The history of Cape Town goes back to very ancient times. Prior to
European settlement, it was inhabited periodically by San hunter-gatherers,
and the nomadic Khoi-Khoi. The area was most probably visited by ancient Phoenician,
and later by Arab and Chinese vessels. In the early days of European trade with
the East, it was a stop over for the sailors. In 1652 the Dutch East India Company
established a permanent settlement under the leadrship of Jan van Riebeeck with
the purpose of growing vegetables for the passing ships. A small stronghold
was built. The original community of Dutch settlers were soldiers and farmers
who worked for the company.
