Citrusdal

Citrusdal, about 2 hours drive from Cape Town on the N7 route, lies on the banks of the Olifants River, surrounded by citrus orchards and Karoo vegetation, such as rooibos and buchu. The village is in the Olifants River Valley, between the Koue Bokkeveld and Swartberg Mountain ranges - .

The N7 route passes through the Piekenaarskloof just southwest of the town. Clanwilliam is about 50Km north on the N7, and Piketberg about 40Km south.

The R303 route leads to the south to Ceres, passing Prince Alfred Hamlet. Just outside Citrusdal, this route passes through the Middelberg Pass, and close to Prince Alfred Hamlet through the Gydo Pass.

Towards the Atlantic Ocean, very small places (mainly railway stations) are: Eendekuil, Het Kruis, Paleisheuwel, Sandberg, Redelinghuys, Noordkuil and Wolfhuis. Coastal villages are Elands Bay, Lamberts Bay and Dwarskersbos.

Citrus orchards

The town originated among citrus orchards, hence its name. When the trees are in flower, the aroma of citrus penetrates everything.

The oldest fruit bearing citrus tree in South Africa, about 250 years old, is on the farm Hexrivier, and was declared a National Monument.

Spring flowers

Typical Namaqualand spring flowers can be seen in the area during the months of August and September after good rains.
