Clanwilliam is named after the father-in-law (the Earl of Clanwilliam) of Sir John Cradock

Buildings of interest are the Old Prison (built in 1808), a typical Irish settler home, and the original magisterial (i.e. landdrost) building. There is a local art gallery (called Kunshuis, i.e. Art House). At Ramskop there is a wild-flower garden where an annual spring show is held (July - October). There are 400 species of ingigeneous flowers. Clanwilliam Dam offers watersport, such as skiing.

History


In early years the town was known as Jan Dissels Vlei, after the stream of that name that flows through the town. In 1814 the name was changed to Clanwilliam. It became a municipality in 1900.

Economy


Farming: Subtropical and deciduous fruit trees. Citrus, rooibos tea, tobacco, cereals, vegetables, buchu are grown here.
