History
George was laid out as a town in 1811 by the magistrate (or landdrost)
Adrianus van Kervel, who named the town Georgetown. The town plane decreed
that streets be 91m wide lined with trees to protect pedestrians from the
scorching sun. George became a municipality in 1837.
