History
In earlier years the area was inhabited by San people. Later a Khoi-Khoi tribe, the Kogikwa, settle here under leadership of Gonnema. To combat cattle thieving early Dutch settlers built a military outpost here. Dutch farmers began to settle in the early 1700s. In 1835 a Church was built on the farm Grootfontein. The town developed gradually around the church. In 1868 J Versveld started farming on top of the mountains. In 1889 he constructed a pass which today offers views across the low lying areas. The Versveld Pass is named after him.
