History
The area was inhabited in the Middle Stone Age. Khoi-Khoi and San
people also loved here. The bay was visited by Portuguese sailors. In 1577
Manuel da Perestrello gave the name Formosa Bay to the bay. In 1778 Governor
Joachim van Plettenberg journeyed here and erected a stone pillar to claim
the spot for the Dutch East India Company. In the 1820s a farmhouse and inn
was built by the Rex family of Knysna in the area, now part of the Formosa
Inn. In the 1860s the place became a centre for the timbre trade. Forest Hall
was built in 1863 by William Newdigate.
