Some of the oak trees planted by Simon van der Stel in the late
1600s still grow in the town. Libertas Parva, built in 1783, houses the Rembrand
van Rijn Art Gallery and Oude Meester Stellenryck Wine Museum. There is also
an Oude Meester Brandy Museum. The VOC Kruithuis (an arsenal built by the
Dutch East Indian Company) is on the village green (known as die Braak), which
in earlier years was a military parade ground. Schreuder House is a cottage
built in 1709. Grosvenor House, built in 1782 by Christiaan Neethling, is
home to the Stellenbosch Village Musuem and has slave quarters and a coach
