The origin of the name is uncertain. One version is as follows. Struis Bay is Dutch for Straw Bay. It is also known as Struisbaai. The name probably comes from the fishing huts built in earlier times of straw. Another version says it comes from the Dutch Vogelstruis (Ostrich), which dropped the Vogel from the name.
