Touwsriver means River of the Pass

San rock paintings can be seen in the area, especially in Pienaarskloof. A nature reserve (2'700Ha) is home to wild flowers, birds and mammals.

In 1877 a railway station was built here and named Montagu Road. In 1883 the name was changed to Touwsriver. It became a municipality in 1962.
